Assassin's Creed - Lineage (Part 1)

Ubisoft has released the first part of "Assassin's Creed Lineage" - a three-part series of short films produced to tie-in with the upcoming game, Assassin's Creed II. The series acts as a prequel to the upcoming stab-em-up and helps to set up the events prior to the storyline of the game. Make no mistake - this is not a trailer, it is a proper short film with a story. Also, while game movies are usually just a tad weak, this is definitely something different and quite impressive. Can't wait for the next episode in the series.

Assassin's Creed II DS Nov. 17, not on PC 'til '10

Spin-off installment in Ubisoft's stealth action franchise sees Ezio grappling with Spanish Inquisition; desktop edition bumped to next year on quality concerns.

About this time last month, the Entertainment Software Rating Board Today, Ubisoft made the game official, saying Assassin's Creed II: Discovery for the DS and DSi would join the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game on store shelves November 17. An unrelated PSP edition of the game, titled Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, will arrive on the same day.

Though the console and DS editions of Assassin's Creed II will share a protagonist, Nintendo's installment tells a spin-off story, in which Ezio travels to Spain to rescue a fraternal brother held by the Spanish Inquisition. Whereas the tepidly received original Assassin's Creed DS was created by Gameloft, a company Ubisoft divested itself of in 2007, Assassin's Creed II: Discovery is in development at Griptonite Games, a Foundation 9 studio.

Ezio's side-scrolling adventure will see him squaring off against Templars, as well as platforming through various Spanish locales. DSi owners will have the added perk of being able to plaster photographs of themselves on "Wanted!" posters found throughout the game.

In related Assassin's Creed II news, Ubisoft has announced through its Twitter feed that the PC edition will not be joining its console brethren on November 17. Instead, the publisher has opted to delay the PC edition to the first quarter of 2010, in order to allow for "a bit more time for the dev team to deliver the best quality game to you."

Notably, the original Assassin's Creed on the PC, which saw release nearly five months after the console editions, sparked a lawsuit in 2008. Ubisoft's claim stemmed from allegations that an employee at the company charged with reproducing Assassin's Creed's disc had leaked the game online a full six weeks before it was to be released at retail. Ubisoft claimed that the leaked edition of the game was downloaded more than 700,000 times, costing the publisher millions of dollars.

In Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, players will experience the intensity, diversity and claustrophobia of a modern conflict from the unique perspectives of an infantry marine, a helicopter pilot, a Special Forces officer or a tank commander, each engaged against the full force of the Chinese PLA on a scale never previously experienced in a military action title.

Gameplay takes the form of a First-Person Shooter which simulates an immense conflict between advanced forces and provides unparalleled scope with different military disciplines, vehicles and equipment, making this one of the most authentic and hardcore shooters ever.

Dragon Rising is set several years in the future. Oil concerns have led to a conflict between Russia and China. The United States intervenes on behalf of its old Cold War foe to drive the invading Chinese PLA forces out. You play as one of these troops, and through the set of 11 long campaign missions you'll be tasked with special ops objectives that range from taking out key targets to clearing the way for armor to roll through valleys. The missions themselves aren't the most exciting in design -- you're more likely to get a thrill out of the tense moments between combat than any of the major set pieces -- as you play more of a supporting role for the greater war instead of the individual hero most games cast the main character as.

Then again, this is a real war you're in, not one full of Hollywood theatrics. At first glance, it might seem like crouching in a field of brambles scoping out the horizon while slowly crawling forward wouldn't make for the most compelling of games. The fact is Operation Flashpoint isn't for everybody. The action is slow and deliberate. The punishment for making a mistake is large; especially on the Hardcore setting that removes all heads-up-display help and checkpoints. Get shot just once in the leg and you'll start bleeding. Even after you patch it up, you'll find yourself hobbled and unable to sprint as quickly.
